<image:title>Burn This Boat - Burn This Boat: Video Installation</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece is the culmination of video and audio recordings made during a year long journey down the Mississippi River as part of a flotilla of homemade houseboats whose inhabitants have made a conscious choice to live beyond societal conventions. Living off of foraged food, catfish, scraps from the trash, and food bank hand outs, and traveling in boats made from scraps of other boats, ply wood, plastic barrels and even and old Volkswagon, the crew of this armada invents their lives on a daily basis. This three channel video installation immerses the viewer in the sights sand sounds of life along a lush, deeply american, dystopian wilderness that was once the country's economic superhighway. Exhibited at Innova gallery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and as part of the True/False film festival in Columbia, Missouri.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Time spent with Evan, Dave and their cadre of boat folks... started this project on one of their earlier trips on the Tombigbee and then continued with them on their next big trip on the Mississippi River. This footage is primarily from the first short film I made, and a little of the footage from the year long journey... The footage has had many incarnations: as part of a multi-media performance piece, gallery installations and a short film.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Burn This Boat: Video Installation (Copy)</image:title>

<image:caption>For 9 years, Yusef "Bunchy" Shakur has been hosting an annual backpack giveaway and block party on the street where he grew up as part of his "Restoring the Neighbor Back to the Hood" initiative. This past year he partnered with Michigan Roundtable to add a storytelling element to the event. Michigan Roundtable's Race2Equity project and exhibit "We Don't Want Them Here" was featured on the first floor of the future "Restoring the Neighbor Back to Hood" community center. In this video we meet Yusef, the people involved with the exhibit, see the neighborhood, and learn about their powerful collaboration. <image:caption>Along the streets of urban Detroit a self styled cowboy named Durrel Montgomery rides his horse with a mission in mind. 'They say what's good for the outside of a horse is good for the inside of man' Durrel tells us. He believes that working with horses kept him out of trouble as a kid and taught him important values. Today he dreams of passing those values on to a new generation of Detroit youth by starting a riding center in the city. In this short film we meet Durrel, see him riding through the city and taking care of his horse at his ranch with his son, and sitting down for a drink by his fire at the end of his day. <image:caption>This year something has changed. Julia Putnam feels like she's really become "a grown-up". Here, she reflects upon her first year as the principal of a new charter elementary school on the east side of Detroit, Michigan. The school is named after her mentor, Grace Lee Boggs, who she met when she was sixteen years old. Julia is now 38 and Grace is 99. We meet Julia, Grace, the students at The James and Grace Lee Boggs School and learn about their path "in love and struggle". <image:title>LOVE & STRUGGLE - Conversations in our Neighborhood: Oral History Club at the James and Grace Lee Boggs School</image:title>
<image:caption>The Oral History Club at the James and Grace Lee Boggs School is a small, dedicated group of grade school students who stay after school to interview members of their community- most of whom have a relationship to the building they now call their school. The neighborhood that the Boggs school calls home is one that has faced a lot of challenges in recent years and its history, and inhabitants are rapidly disappearing. These conversations serve as a learning experience for the students, a preservation of history via anecdotal stories of the people who have lived in the neighborhood for decades, and, ultimately as a community building experience: brining the kids and elder members of their community closer together. Featured in the video are interviewees: Art "Red" Tabb, Tyree Guyton, Hali Giessler. Students include: Na'Kyah Ngozi Marie Adjuman, Lucia Putnam, Maya Nicole Wheeler, Jacob Michael Wheeler, Rene' McLemore. Special Thanks to: H. T. <image:title>BACK TO YOUR SENSES - Back to Your Senses: James</image:title>
<image:caption>A profile of sound artist James Eck Rippie. "Most striking to me, during our interviews, was the driving force behind James' work as an artist. He wants to live a life in which everyone is more highly aware of their surroundings, and he wants to make work that demands that level of awareness from others. His work is a call to come "Back to Your Senses" in a very literal way; asking the receiver be fully present in the moment, and experience the nuances of their own perception." <image:caption>Recently Emily left New York City, where she had a successful career working for magazines including The New Yorker, GQ, and Gourmet, to return to her home state of Michigan, and live a life more in line with her ideals. Here, the tiny village of Elberta, on the shores of Lake Michigan, Emily is working to revive a long retired community newspaper, and to turn her small plot of land within the village limits, into a homestead that can sustain her. <image:caption>This is Zoe Moseler. Her parents, Mark and Mandy Moseler, former public school teachers, are taking a big leap. They're putting all their resources towards starting an artisan distillery in Northwestern Lower Michigan. They've sold their house, and are squatting Zoe's grandma's house, and hoping for the best. Zoe has a plan of her own; she's making jewelry out of a special stone that can only be found in the region where her folks are hoping to start their business.
